Why did you decide to become a dentist?
Dr. Ong began her journey in the dental field as a college student, working as a dental assistant in an oral surgery office in downtown Manhattan. She observed firsthand the surgeon's clinical expertise and ability to alleviate patients' anxiety and pain. After the first day, she thought to herself, "I want to do what he does." Through his mentorship, she became fascinated by dentistry as a science and art, dedicated to lifelong learning, and passionate about treating patients and improving their lives.
Where did you study dentistry?
After obtaining her Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University, Dr. Ong enrolled in the Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine. While there, she participated in a two-week dental outreach mission to provide free care to the Lakota Sioux tribe in Pine Ridge South Dakota. She was also selected to represent Stony Brook University at an international aesthetic dentistry contest sponsored by Dentsply Sirona. As a result of her efforts, she was the recipient of the Academy of General Dentistry’s senior student award. Right after graduating, she completed a general practice residency at Montefiore Hospital, gaining valuable experience treating medically complex patients using advanced procedures.
She continues to refine and grow her knowledge by maintaining memberships in various professional dental organizations, including:
- The American Dental Association
- Maryland State Dental Association
- Academy of General Dentistry
Outside of dentistry, what do you like to do?
Away from the office, Dr. Ong likes to stay active by hiking, working out, and exploring the great outdoors whenever she can. She enjoys running 10Ks, but when relaxing, nothing makes her happier than trying a new restaurant. In addition to English, Dr. Ong is also fluent in Chinese.
